42-16383914Floating candles provide a warm, relaxing ambiance which is just one of the many reasons their popularity is growing.  Place Floating candles in your bathtub for an awesome experience for your party guests. Choose shapes and colors that match the theme of your party to add that extra zing to your get-together.  Floating candles that are scented are an added bonus to an already breathtaking view.

For an interesting effect, add a few drops of food coloring if desired, and place some fresh flower petals and floating candles in the bath. You may also add some essential oils for scent. When guests walk into the washroom they will be pleased at the sight!  If you have a powder room instead, fill a large glass bowl using the same method and place it somewhere on the floor or the top of the toilet tank if it’s small enough.

Some companies make floating candle holders, which can hold any sort of candle. If you want a floating candle effect and you do not have a specially designed holder to float the candle in, make sure to use a candle which is labeled as a floating candle, to ensure that the candle will hold up as it burns down.

*Please remember to keep your bath and shower curtain well away from the flames.

Have you ever used floating candles?  What different ways have you used floating candles?

pillar_gold_group3_240Getting a “decorator look” at home is quite simple using pillar candles.  You can use inexpensive items to make a visually appealing group of pillar candles.

Begin by selecting 3 pillar candles that are not identical in height, but they shouldn’t vary too much in size.  It is nice to keep them the same color, but mixing the colors can create breathtaking and dramatic decorative accents.  Different wax textures in the same color also looks great.  When grouping them together think in terms of layering.  You can bring one forward and tuck one a bit behind the other so that they seem to overlap each other.  Remember to leave a space between each candle to avoid burning into each other’s sides.

Another great tip is to wrap your pillar candles with decorative ribbon or raffia.  You can tie a ribbon around one pillar candle or a group of 3 candles.

A decorative ceramic dish, platter, bowl, or mirrored base makes a stunning arrangement with a large pillar candle such as a 3-wick candle or a clump of three candles.  Fill the base with decorative stones, potpourri, sand, glass beads, silk flowers, seashells, or faux pearl necklaces and push the pillars down.  Just remember to always be sure to burn candles on heat-resistant, inflammable surfaces and with surrounding decorative pieces that are not flammable.  Some people choose not to burn candles when they have these stunning arrangements.  Just keep in mind that safety always comes first.

Remember to decide on your focal point for pillar candle placement.  In which area of the room do you wish your guest’s eyes to automatically go?  You can find unusual spaces or corners to transform with your beautiful pillar candle arrangement.  A great focal point is to cluster your pillar candles in front of a wall mirror or use a small mirror as the candle tray.  The mirrors throw off more light when burning the candles.  Another great idea is to group pillar candles inside an unused fireplace, especially during the summer.

Try any of these ideas and you will see how you can easily add a warm inviting glow to your home.  Place several arrangements around your home and hear the wonderful comments from family members and friends.

One of the best reasons to buy scented candles is the benefits due to their aromatherapy properties. Aromatherapy is an alternative approach for helping the mind, body, and spirit through the use of essential oils and fragrances to create an atmosphere and stimulate the senses. Science and research has shown that many moods and negative emotions can be lifted due to the fragrances or scents that are introduced into the environment. According to Dr. Solomon H. Snyder, a professor and director of the department of neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the parts of the brain that are the olfactory regions are also known to be major parts of the brain that regulate emotions. “Dr. Gary E. Schwartz, a professor of psychology and psychiatry at Yale University, has found that certain scents produce changes in blood pressure and other physiological responses comparable to those achieved through meditation, a standard relaxation technique used to help people deal with stress. The smell of spiced apple, Dr. Schwartz says, is especially effective. In studies of healthy volunteers under stress, it has brought systolic blood pressure down an average of three to five points and in some instances has lowered diastolic blood pressure as well.”

Aromatherapy goes back about 5000 years to the ancient egyptians who used essential oils in baths, massages, and the embalming process. Today studies show that certain aromatherapy scents can trigger reactions within the body which relieve stress, enhance mental clarity and concentration, help us gain energy, create sensual mood and setting, help you fall asleep at night, and even help you with pain management. By understanding the different aromatherapy properties connected to various scents, you can choose scented candles that will have the desired or intended effect. Humans are naturally drawn to things that smell good and make us feel good.

Keep in mind that you receive the benefits subtly through continued use. For relaxation, use a scented candle when you are alone taking a candlelight bubble bath. Write a poem or story, and read a book while using concentration fragrances. Use certain scents to bring back happy memories or when expecting company over for the holidays. Create a sensual mood with vanilla, rose, or sandalwood.

Companies in Tokyo use scents to improve productivity. One company uses scents of lemons in the morning, at midday the scent of roses reduce stress, and in the afternoon the scent of cypress is used as a pick-me up. In the Tokyo Stock exchange, the scents of peppermint are released through ducts and vents to perk up associates. A company in the US that offers mood-drenched indoor scents diffused an apple aroma through a lecture hall during a seminar to relax the listeners and enhance their receptivity to new ideas. At the moment the company is developing automotive versions to help keep drivers awake and alert. Also, scent alarm clocks spray out a pleasing up-you-get fragrance.

As you can see aromatherapy is an efficient and cost effective way to increase productivity, quality of work, as well as a sense of well being. Try scented candles to add a pleasing atmosphere in an entire room. You can also use different forms such as diffusers, aroma melts warmers, incense, linen sprays, hanging sachets in closets, and scent-based lotions. There are many ways to enrich our family and personal lives without spending too much time and money.

Who would want to go back to the scentless and colorless world of unscented candles? It wouldn’t hurt to try lighting a scented candle to activate our senses into different modes and moods. It is quite interesting how the mind, body, and scents can lead towards a new path in wellness.

Here are some basic scents:
Lavender- soothing and relaxing; said to help relieve stress, depression, anxiety, and nervous disorders; used to treat headaches and to have less difficulty falling asleep; some find it useful during childbirth; nice in bedroom and bath

Citrus scents- (grapefruit, lemon, orange, etc…) invigorating and brightens the mood of a room; uplifting and clean; eliminates anxiety and stress; in a study of lemon scents it caused the biggest drop in mistakes during keyboard typing; helps you concentrate

Vanilla- sweet scent known to be a natural aphrodisiac; naturally warming and soothing; relaxing and comforting; thoughts of favorite foods and happy memories of home and childhood

Cinnamon- Helps with exhaustion and fatigue; wonderful effects on nerves; calms you down and makes you more aware

Geranium- soothing and relaxing scent

Jasmine- deep and relaxing; sensual scent

Rose- Ability to relax a person and may help a woman balance out her hormones; calming benefit

Sandalwood- relaxing and calming ability; helps soothe irritation and lifts depression; associated with meditation

lilac- helps recall past lives; helps decision making; improves memory

Feng.Shui.CandlesLooking for a great gift for a friend or family member?  Well, look no further.  Candles are one of the top gifts given and received!

One reason people love candles is that they are often used to bring relaxation.  Consider giving a highly scented candle to someone who enjoys taking bubble baths by candlelight.  Gazing at the flame is a mesmerizing experience and relaxes both eyes and the mind.

Another reason for giving scented candles as a gift is that they are used to create a romantic atmosphere during intimate evenings at home.  Because a candle throws a light on a relatively small area, it creates a sense of intimacy among people basking in its glow.

One of the best reasons to give scented candles as gifts is due to their aromatherapy properties.  Aromatherapy is the practice of using scents and fragrances to create an atmosphere and stimulate the senses.  As you study the different aromatherapy properties connected to particular scents, you will better choose the fragrance that your gift recipient will love.  Keep in mind that you can shed the day’s stresses with the healing effects of lavender and vanilla.  You can also journey to a place of silent reflection.  Special blends of eucalyptus and spearmint helps you relax and refocus.  You can awaken your senses with the refreshing blend of sage and mandarin.

Candles make the perfect gifts for men and women.  There are many scents that appeal to both men and women.  It is easy to find candle accessories to complement your gift of candles and many complement a masculine décor.

Another way to give scented candles as gifts is to create a gift basket full of fun and romantic items and add candles as well.  One great idea is to use spa products.  Help women create their own personal oasis and transform an ordinary space into a soothing home sanctuary.  To create an in-home experience choose candles with exotic fragrances. Bath salt crystals, body butter, Spa music CD, and sugar body scrubs are just some of the great self-pampering products you can also include in the basket.

As you can see, scented candles make excellent gifts for any occasion.  Since everyone can easily use scented candles in any room of their home, you can be sure they will be used.

pillars-three-wicks-big_full1Here are some tips I am picking up along the way about taking care of your candles.

  • To bring out the shine of your candle and to remove surface scratches on the candles, polish it softly with an old pair of pantyhose or fine mesh stockings.
  • For most candles, snip the wick to about 1/4 inch above the wax before each burning for clean and even burning.  This will also keep the flame close enough to melt across the edge of the candle.  Do not cut the wicks of tealights, floaters, and 3-wick candles.  When burning 3-wick candles, point the wicks toward the center of the candle.
  • Of course, do not place candles in direct sunlight since this causes fading and warping.
  • Always place your candles on a flat and leveled surface, away from any draft.
  • For your pillar candles, burn one hour for every inch in diameter.  This will be enough time for the wax to liquefy to the edges of the candle.  Be sure to “hug” gently around the pillar candles towards the wick once it is extinguished and warm.  Mold the candle back to its original shape.  This maintains a flat surface on top, not a deep well.  See picture above.  If you do not burn the pillar for the appropriate time, it will burn down the middle and you will have excess wax on the sides.  Do not “hug” square candles.
  • Use a snuffer to extinguish your candles.  Just hold the snuffer above the flame for a few seconds and out goes the flame.  This prevents any wax from being splattered when blowing out the candle and helps keep the wick centered.  If your wick is off center this will cause uneven burning and melting.
  • Store candles in a cool, dry place.
  • If carbon builds on wick, extinguish the candle, trim the wick for clean and even burning, and then re-light.
  • Always burn candles in appropriate candle holders.
  • And of course, do not burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire!  Never leave a burning candle unattended and in the reach of children or pets.
